Finding her way: how RiverTracks helped Mandy thrive

Mandy* was 15 when she was referred to RiverTracks in 2023 after frequent suspensions for physical and verbal altercations and growing contact with police. Her referral noted she “goes from zero to one hundred” and struggles to manage her emotions.

At home, life was challenging.

Both her mother and brother faced mental health issues and substance use and family conflict often led to intervention orders. Mandy described her relationship with her mother as “toxic” and chose to live with her supportive grandparents whenever possible.

When she joined RiverTracks, Mandy was disengaged from school and spent much of her time with anti-social peers. Through one-on-one support, the youth work team helped her understand her emotions and adopt self-regulation strategies such as mindful breathing and movement.

They also supported her move to live full-time with her grandparents, giving her a safer, more stable environment, while maintaining a relationship with her mother at a distance.

RiverTracks recognised Mandy’s talent in woodworking and helped her secure local employment, boosting her confidence, independence and skills. RiverTracks also provided funding for a basketball membership which gave her access to positive social networks outside school and the program.

Since joining, Mandy has shown significant changes: improved emotional regulation, stronger relationships, re-engagement with school and increased independence.
