rivertrackS program
get on track
The Get on Track program is a flexible, hands-on alternative to classroom learning, tailored to each young person’s needs where young people learn practical trade and life skills while building friendships and confidence.
As our core program, it’s a safe, supportive space.
Get on Track is self-referral (parent, child or school can refer young people). With a maximum of 10 participants, our small groups allow for personalised guidance and active, hands-on learning.
RiverTracks has partnerships and collaborates with local community organisations where young people can experience and learn in different environments. These include: Murwillumbah Community Garden, SES, Murwillumbah Community Centre, local schools and sports clubs. At times, young people (with the support of youth workers) also help elderly community members with garden upkeep.
Get on Track is a school hours program supported by youth workers, it involves:
- Woodwork
- Gardening and landscaping
- Cooking
- Community outreach projects
- Leisure activity second half of the day such as swimming/fishing
Young people aged 12 to 20+ who might be struggling at school or need extra support and guidance to find the right path forward. Young people who attend the Get on Track program can also participate in work-free activities during school holidays catered to their interests.
“RiverTracks became a safe space for me and something I looked forward to every week. I got to do tasks I enjoyed, socialise and have support around me and help to achieve my goals.
When I joined I had no will to live and was stuck in unhealthy cycles. It’s hard to describe how much of a positive impact RiverTracks has had on me. They provided a place where I felt safe, I felt wanted, truly cared for and part of something. They helped me get to where I am today and discover who I am.”– Gemma, 18 years old
